Holidays 2026 – Day 9

It is July 13th today; we have been underway for 9 days. Fortunately, we can sleep in, because I was quite tired, and then we are on our way to Borkum to really explore the island this time. At 11:10 AM we set sail and we have to sail about 25 miles. It ultimately took 5 hours; this is because of the current: first 3 hours with us and then two hours against us.

Along the way, we also encounter the largest ship of the entire holiday. Once in the harbour of Borkum, where we were moored last time, we discover that it is not deep enough. We are almost stuck in the mud, but fortunately we manage to turn around and get back to the channel and sail to the other (working) harbor. There we are moored three rows deep, with a lot of wind from the side, but eventually we are securely moored.

We go to the town; we take the train, which is really cool. We decide to go out for dinner in Borkum, after first walking along the beach. That was really delicious food and a real treat. There is no train going back, because no ferry is running. It takes an hour for the bus to leave, and we start walking. That is a good 7 km… then chilling for a bit.

When we arrive: the plan for tomorrow is to leave for Lauwersoog at 5 o’clock. It is high tide tonight; the earlier we leave, the better the current will be in our favour towards Lauwersoog tomorrow. In any case, out of the sea channel before 6:30. And then on to Vlieland on Wednesday. That’s it for today.
